Employee Recognition: the key to Increased Productivity

Don Schmitz/Human Resource Staffing

Survival is keeping our best employees but growth is keeping all of our best employees. So how do we keep all our best employees?

Research conducted recently by Towers Watson shows that a 15% improvement in engagement levels, can equal a 2% improvement in the bottom line.

The old “Pat-on-the-back” remains part of the answer to increasing productivity. Leading companies create a work culture where employee behaviors are aligned with strategic objectives and core values. When the reward behaviors align with a company's core valued, the values will be lived throughout the organization.

We all know that all workers are temporary…so what can we do? The following is a compilation of some “best practices” to increase your company's productivity and help keep all your best employees;

  • Community Service: time off from work to do charity and volunteer work
  • Monthly Morning Email: A leader of the organization recognizes individual's accomplishments. This accomplishment may be work related or something positive in an employee's life; birth of a child, marriage or grandchildren
  • Blue Tie Club : outstanding employees (male and female) are recognized for a outstanding accomplishment each week, and presented with a blue tie and entered into annual drawing. All Blue tie members are encouraged to where their tie one day a month and at special events.
  • Employee of the month program : recognizing an employee for their accomplishments, a quote from the individual, how long they have worked for the company and a gift. This information is rewarded publicly in front of the employees and a sign is placed in the lobby with their name and accomplishment for all to see..
  • A gift of their dreams : all employees are asked as part of their orientation what an outstanding gift for them would be and when the employee is recognized for outstanding performance, they receive their personal gift.
  • Anniversary Celebrations : the anniversary with the company is celebrated with a plaque honoring their gift to the company. This plaque is made in house and contains a personal message tailored to the individual such as work in the community, sales goal, 5th anniversary etc.
  • Drawing for $'s : Every time a goal is accomplished, $25.00 goes into a hat. At the end of the quarter everyone draws. The more goals accomplished the more money is won.
  • Holiday $'s : Everyone in the company is given one hour to spend money at a local shopping center. The only rule is “one hour”.
  • Traveling award : To support the families of employees who do a great deal and travel a great deal, the manager sends flowers to the family or sends a gift card for the family to enjoy a dinner.
  • Letter of accomplishment : A letter of accomplishment is hand delivered to an employee with copies sent to all the leaders in the organization and their family.

The end result of all these programs will be greater performance, commitment and longevity to the organization.
