Steps to Finding a Job Before you Leave
Don Schmitz /Human Resource Staffing
- Do
your best work now!
Don't burn any
bridges—leave with a good impression on everyone. Do everything
right and work extra hard. Don't use work time to search
for a new position.
- Gather
recommendations
Ask for reference letters from ‘Supervisors” and begin your
plans now. Make your request in person if possible. Include
these letters of recommendation on your Linked in page.
- Google
yourself
Check to be sure there is no damaging information or photos
out there that could hurt you. Companies say they won't
check but it's a common misnomer. If you find something
you don't like, ask the site to remove the information…they
often will.
- Contact
companies you know who are hiring
Watch the news
about companies who are hiring and contact anyone you know
at those companies after you apply.
- Gather
all the names you can get
If anyone owes you, now is the time to cash in all your
chips. Collect all your colleagues' and business partners'
contact information and connect with them by email or on
social media. Be sure you have a generic email address separate
from work or school. Tell them you are looking for work
and ask for their help. Always include your resume
- Gather
personal examples of your work
Collect examples
of your best work and put it in your portfolio but be sure
not to take any proprietary information. This will come
in very handy during your interviews.
- After
you have a position, say goodbye
Again, don't burn any bridges. If possible, take time to
walk around the office on your last day and say goodbye
personally. If you have already found a job, don't flaunt
it and be sure not to say anything negative about any employees
or your employer. Send a goodbye email to people out of
the office or at another location. As soon as you know your
new contact information, send it to them and stay in touch.
