HR
"Twitterlike" Communication

Everywhere
we look today, Human Resources is asking for more speed, more
technology, more accountability and more change. We all want
to do more but how can it be accomplished?
One
of our greatest strengths of HR professional's is our ability
to communicate and we are being asked to lead the way. Both
HR employees and HR candidates need to maximize on our skills
of communication to be as effective as possible. The ever
increasing tools of technology help us do just that; HRIS
systems, phones, emails, text messages, social-networks and
our written and verbal communication with one another. These
tools of communication allow us to improve our ability to
communicate quickly and efficiently.
The
best way to describe the new HR communication style is “Twitterlike”.
We all need to practice the use of headlines, shorter sentences
and questions in our speaking and writing. Newspapers have
been doing it for years. Today it's all about productivity
and innovation and less attention on compliance and legal
issues.
Training
needs to be provided for other areas of our company to create
a uniform communication language. This training will reduce
the need for management and help to hold everyone accountable
for the results. Providing new financial incentives based
upon results will ensure everyone's effectiveness.
This
is indeed an exciting time for HR. We are all learning to
ask better questions such as “What are your thoughts on this
project” and “What ideas do you have to improve our process”?
We are learning to evaluate the effectiveness of projects
in measurable terms and reward on the basis of excellence.
Our planning sessions are spending more time creating and
evaluating long and short term financial goals and holding
everyone accountable for the results. An increasing number
of both small and large companies are purchasing HR Systems
to document and measure the effectiveness of our goals.
TV
Commercials are a great example of the new speed communication.
Commercials are a collection of pictures that are constantly
moving and changing. They capture your attention by using
bizarre scenes that have nothing to do with the product itself
only to throw in the product name somewhere near the end.
Candidates
looking for work need to exemplify this speed and style in
their resumes and communication. Skills and proof of their
effectiveness is a must. Candidates can keep their resumes
simple by using more bullets and reducing any statements to
no more than three lines. Eliminating sentences will help
candidates keep their resumes to no more than two pages. Finally
candidates need to speak directly to the part they played
in the improvement of processes and measurable results of
their effectiveness.
“Twitterlike”
communication will result in increased effectiveness and more
productive employees.
