Finding the right personality!
Don Schmitz/Human Resource Staffing
Getting
along with other people is one of the most important skills
in life. We know that people with good personalities are great
team players and can have a major impact on the company’s
profits.
For purposes of this article, your task is to find and hire
candidates based on their personality only. I invite you to
look at the following three personalities and determine which
of the three you would hire and why. I invite your
thoughts and comments.
1. A college student goes out
of his way to help a young lady who is extremely intoxicated
and sick. The twenty-year-old man calls the police and stays
with her until the police arrive. After the women received
her care, the police discovered through questioning that the
young man is also intoxicated and issue him a ticket for $140.00.
Thoughts
This story appeared in the paper and received a number
of calls from readers offering to pay for his ticket. He obviously
did the right thing in helping the girl. He stayed with her
until the police arrived. Maybe he should have called the
police and left or perhaps never made the call. How many people
would have even bothered to help?

2. A person being considered
for a position is extremely excited and well qualified for
a position with your company. During the interview you discover
one of his role models was his father. After the interview
process was complete, you discover his father’s name
is in the paper. He was convicted of submitting fraudulent
invoices to his employer.
Thoughts
Would you bring this person back for an interview and
ask the candidate more questions? Would you ignore the information
you have? To what degree has the ethics and values of the
father been an influence on the son? Perhaps, his father is
innocent.
Would you hire this person?
3. A person is applying for work
at a defense related business. During college, she was actively
involved in a peace movement. She has matured and is now 40
years old. In the interview she is asked about her involvement
in the organization. She denies her involvement thinking that
all that is behind her.
Thoughts
She lied and therefore shouldn’t be considered.
Being involved in a peace movement when she was 20 years-old
has nothing to do with her who she is today.
