Exit Interview Opportunities

When an employee leaves a company, the work of HR is not complete until an exit interview is properly conducted. Exit interviews provide an opportunity to gain information that you might not be able to gain in any other way.

Exit interviews can be accomplished in person, by answering a standard list of questions or both. In person interviews are best to get at the ‘why’ questions and provide an opportunity to personally thank each employee for their work. In lieu of an interview, a list of questions can be answered and analyzed numerically to determine trends.

Whatever method you choose, don’t overlook this opportunity to gain candid information about how your company can improve.

The following questions may be questions you would want to include in an exit interview;

•  What is your reason for leaving?
•  How do you feel about our company?
•  What have you enjoyed in working for our company?
•  What are you hoping to gain in your new company that you haven’t found here?
•  How would you describe the communication in our company? Department?
•  How would you describe the culture of our company?
•  What would you say about how you were motivated? How could this have been improved?
•  What competencies do you feel were required to do your job?
•  What recommendations or changes would you recommend for your position?
•  How could the organization better have utilized your time?
•  What could the organization do to retain its best people?
•  In your new position, what are they offering you that we are not?
•  What recommendations do you have for your replacement to better help them transition into this position?.
