Finding
the right spoon size
Don Schmitz/Human Resource Staffing
Bill Clinton, as a teenager, told a group of boys at summer
camp that he was going to be president of the United States.
Thirty years later, he brought together the same group of
boys to celebrate his accomplishment. How did he accomplish
this goal?
Great things are accomplished when we focus our efforts on
achieving one common goal, but, large goals are accomplished
only through a series of ‘small steps.’ If the
steps are too large, disillusionment will result. Our task
is to find the right spoon size to divide larger goals into
smaller bite-size pieces.
As a former first grade teacher, I was always amazed at how
children learned to read. Reading is generally taught by first
learning the five vowel sounds and than adding the consonants
one at a time. Slowly, the child is able to blend the sounds
together into words and eventually sentences. If we can apply
this same process to any large goal, we too, will accomplish
great things.
Eight ‘small steps’ to accomplish a ‘large’
goal:
| 1. |
Envision
your goal |
| 2. |
Write
your goal along with a timeline |
| 3. |
Spend
time each day thinking about how you will achieve it |
| 4. |
Write
small action steps that will help you accomplish the greater
goal |
| 5. |
Share
your goal with others; especially mentors who may support
you in achieving your goal |
| 6. |
Take
action steps daily focusing on the overall goal |
| 7. |
Measure
your success or failure and create smaller action steps
for steps that may have been too difficult |
| 8, |
Celebrate
each step along the way |
