Workforce Courtesy
Don Schmitz/Human Resource Staffing
Courtesy in the workplace is declining at a time when we may need it most. More than half of the workforce today works in cubicles or an open space environment. Working in more confined space accentuates the need for courtesy in the workplace.
We were raised to respect boundaries, but our work environment begs the question; where are our boundaries? The following suggestions are meant to help all of us work more effectively together while working in tight office space:
- Meeting rooms
Use meeting rooms for meetings of two or more people or for private conversations. If you receive a private call at work, ask to call them back later from a private area.
- Respect each other's time--minimize interruptions
Never assume a coworker is less busy than you. Be respectful of meeting times, returning calls and emails as well as work schedules.
- Be aware of your voice level
Everyone needs to concentrate to do their jobs effectively. Some people have bigger voices than others. Talk with your coworkers to determine if you need to tone it down a bit.
- Socialization
Socialization is a natural process to better know one another and develop rapport but unproductive talking for more than a few minutes may be disrespectful to those around you especially if it's personal.
- Remember your common courtesies and use them often
"Good Morning", "Good Night", "Please" and "Thank you". Teamwork is encouraged when we use these simple powerful works.
- Celebrate success
Share good news and successes with coworkers in a respectful manner.
