What’s
working on the job front?
Don Schmitz/Human Resource Staffing
Much has been written about how to find a job in this tough
economy, but who better to answer the question than those
who have recently found positions and those who remain unemployed.
Over the past month, I posed three questions to HR Professionals
who are either looking for or recently found new positions.
The following responses represent a summary of their advice.
1. What are you doing that seems to be working?
--“Networking seems to be the best bang for your buck.”
--“I continue to keep my present position and expanded
my search to outside the Twin Cities.”
--“I’ve been working on an independent consulting
assignment which I obtained through my network.”
--“Networking and more networking---Prior to my current
assignment, I set goals for myself to network with at least
three people per day. Of those three, one was someone whom
I have not previously met. I also set my alarm clock daily
to stay on task. The networking on Linked In, Facebook and
Twitter was helpful.”
--“I’ve been attending a job Transition Group
in Eden Prairie. That has connected me with a couple other
HR people in my same situation. I also joined TCHRA.”
2. Where have you found success?
--“I’ve been completing the ethnicity portions
of the applications and utilizing my veteran, female and Native
American status now more than in the past.”
--“I have found the networking through HR Executive
Forum to be the most quality networking. In addition, I have
found good connections with the MN Recruiters network, HRP
and MN Organizational Development.”
--“I try to network with a group of former employees.”
--“Networking events have been most helpful.”
--“I decided to go back to school part-time since I
couldn’t find work. I ended up finding part-time work
at school. It doesn’t pay the best, but it does pay
for my schooling, broadens my skills and get’s me through
until things improve”
3. What else can companies like Human Resource Staffing
do to assist you?
--“I used to get first and second interview rather easily,
but now I can barely get an interview. I would like to “up-my-game”
ideas on how I can make myself more marketable and desirable.
The old ways aren’t working any more.”
--“I’d like to know about trends, such as if things
are beginning to loosen up a bit.”
--“I attended the HRP workshop called “Motivating
Employees in a Tough Economy. I was very pleased when I registered
to discover that since I was in transition, I only had to
pay½ price. I applaud the organization's recognition
of my needs.”
--“More opportunities to network; specifically network
by expertise” (Benefits, comp OD etc.)
--“I’d like to hear about other people’s
success stories and what’s working for them.”
