Getting a seat at the table
Nancy Hatch Woodard/ Human Resource Staffing
Face it; HR has come a long way over the past two decades. Still, many HR professionals find they don’t have a seat at the executive table.
Often, we are seen more as personnel offices, than strategic partners. Don’t fret, if you’re not yet in the inner circle, there are ways to help your executive staff realize how important HR is to the organization.
Instead of trying to prove HR’s worth, demonstrate HR’s value now. You can do so by:
- Talking the language of business, not the jargon
of HR
Your organization is interested in satisfying the customer and achieving a healthy bottom line. Your team’s goals and plans should be intricately connected to those of your organization.
- Developing a consultant’s mindset
Be the expert your executive staff turns to for information on how to improve productivity, be a change leader, and trusted advisor. Educate your executive team about the importance of human capital issues. Help them understand that engaged employees give the organization a competitive edge.
- Becoming a strategic partner in the business
Show how your different HR functions work with other areas of the company to create an efficient workplace. Deliver on your promises.
- Developing a team with the background and credentials
to earn respect
Show you have a clear understanding of your organization’s key business issues. Educate yourself and your staff on your organization and the industry as a whole.
- Using metrics to prove the value of HR
It’s not always possible to statistically document every function, but you can still show value in those softer areas by charting general progress or added value.
Even
if you don’t find yourself with a seat at the table immediately,
the respect and goodwill you develop will create a vital role
for HR in your organization.
