How to “Be Prepared”
for your next Interview
Don Schmitz/Human Resource Staffing
You’ve heard the old saying, “It’s not what
you say, but how you say it.” These words are especially
true when it comes to a job interview. A prospective employer
wants to SEE passion and excitement for the job.
This is not to say that what you SAY isn’t important.
Everyone needs to write down and role play answers to basic
questions such as: “What are you looking for?”,
“What is it that you’d like to do?” as well
as “Why you believe you are the best candidate for this
position?” However, if it was only the answers that
matter, more interviews would be conducted by email or on
the phone. Only last week, I conducted an interview with an
applicant that said all the “right things.” His
answers were well thought out, but lacked conviction and enthusiasm.
A reality of the world of employment is that many employees
are unhappy in their careers. Money and benefits satisfy some
of our short term needs, but eventually unrest begins to set
in.
How much of our job dissatisfaction is the result not taking
the time to know what we want from our career? Before that
next interview, have a clear visual picture of what the perfect
job looks like. Compare the values of the company you wish
to work for with your own. Consider too; your talents, skills,
experience, education, income needs and ideal working environment.
Write all these thoughts on paper and be clear on what areas
you are not willing to compromise. A perfect match occurs
when; WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER equals THE COMPANY’S NEEDS.
Now, go out and find the company you wish to work for and
sell them on WHY they should hire you. I promise you one thing;
you won’t be lacking in conviction and clarity and the
lucky employer will have found a well qualified candidate
who will be happy, satisfied and productive in their new position.
