We
all need heroes to exemplify during troubling times. In the
United States, in the months of January and February we honor
some of America 's greatest heroes; Martin Luther King, Abraham
Lincoln and George Washington.
We
know heroes are born during times of crisis and that heroes
put themselves at risk for the benefit of others. As evidenced
by recent economic news, many Americans would believe our
country is in time of crisis. Who will be the modern day business
heroes who will provide the guidance necessary during these
troubling times?
To
be a hero, people need to know who you are. Business heroes
often exemplify the following characteristics; strong character,
intelligence, selflessness, perseverance, loyalty and bravery.
All
of these individuals embrace similar values and ideologies
necessary for today's struggling business success. Some possible
business heroes that may guide us going forward include; Bill
Gates, Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey and Naomi Sims.
Bill
Gates, the founder of Microsoft, established a foundation
called, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This foundation
is dedicated to improving equity in global health and learning.
Naomi
Sims made a start as a supermodel and has since become a major
player in the multi-million dollar cosmetics market.
Martha
Stewart, the founder of Martha Stewart Living Omni Media,
recently served five months in prison for inside trading on
the stock market but has returned to her business with renewed
energy.
Oprah
Winfrey, from the ever popular Oprah Winfrey Show has started
a number of related businesses as a result of her popularity.
She also formed the Oprah Winfrey Foundation dedicated to
the support of education and empowerment of women, children
and families of the world.
The
role of today's business leaders has definitely changed. Today's
public better understands and appreciates no one is without
fault. If we have learned anything from history, new heroes
will emerge from this crisis. Certainly, the above mentioned
proven heroes and many others not here mentioned will provide
the guidance we need to face our present day problems. Will
we listen?
Sound
off, what are your thoughts? Who
is one of your heroes?
