Developing Strong Leaders
Don Schmitz / Human Resource Staffing

Successful companies understand the importance of developing strong leaders but they go one step further… they make the process happen. Human Resource Professionals are acutely aware of the shortage of real leaders in their organizations and are likely to become increasingly involved in developing future leaders.

According to author Jim Lukaszewski, in a presentation made this past month at the Human Resource Executive meeting, “Leaders need to see where a company is headed and what need to be accomplished in order to make it happen”. Successful leaders not only require a strong education, but time, responsibility and continuous training to develop effective skills. The best teacher is experience. It's important that we develop leaders in every organization. If you increase the skill, their confidence will grow.

Everyone wants to work with a strong leader. Real leaders strive to bring out the best in others and create leadership opportunities for other leaders to develop by opening doors outside the box. True leaders are experts in a wide variety of communication skills; listening, speaking, seeking feedback, building consensus and moving ideas into products and services. When a leader uses these skills to develop products and services within the organization, real growth occurs for everyone involved. As protégés develop their own leadership skills, they more easily recognize leadership behavior in other people.

Methods for building strong leaders include; recognizing leaders early-on in their career, creating opportunities for them to practice their skill and providing strong mentors to assist them in their growth process. This mentoring can be one-on-one and small group training over a number of years.
