Retention Strategies for Key Employees
Don Schmitz / Human Resource Staffing

Every company wants to retain their best employees. These key individuals account for 80% of the profits and cannot be replaced. Companies open to changing their culture, creating career strategies, maintaining strong values and paying for performance will retain a high percentage of their key employees.

One of the biggest reasons true leaders choose to leave their company is because they don’t believe anyone is listening to their ideas. The most successful companies have found part of the answer lies in strong mentors, managers and includes senior leadership.

It’s often what isn’t said that leads to turnover. Lack of feedback, unspoken changes in salary expectations and changes in expectations all lead to many strong performers leaving early.

Key employees need to have their ideas heard. Take away the table and you take away the employee. It is necessary for strong leaders to have a forum for speaking their minds, criticizing and offering suggestions for change. They must be given opportunities to make mistakes, stretch into new opportunities and take on greater responsibility.

Strong leaders are committed to making a difference and thrive in working with a team of strong leaders. Key employees can see the big picture and know the importance of commitment, brand and overall perception in the workplace.

Companies that recognize and developing career strategies early in the hiring process will have the greatest success. Organizations that are creative provide strong initiative and recognize the value of building and growing key employees will be the most successful.

Retaining future leaders in your organization is a dynamic process and must be made a goal of every growing company in order to succeed.
