Our exceptional economic conditions

Don Schmitz /Human Resource Staffing

Recently, I heard an economist presentation on the state of the economy. He shared many things I don't begin to understand, but what I do remember is, “These are unprecedented times. We are never going to see things get back to normal…normal no longer exists.”

After the conference, I kept thinking about the word, unprecedented, and what it means to business today. I went to Answers.com and found the following definition; having no previous example, not the same as what was previously known or done, exceptional, original

So if we are in unprecedented times, how are we supposed to plan for our future and our company's future?

Doomsayers would say; put your money in safe investments like your mattress, but we all know that isn't the answer. Optimists would say, spend it like there is no tomorrow, but we've been doing that far too long.

Somehow, we as leaders of tomorrow's businesses have to find a new way of doing business. We often discover the answers by reading and listening to others. In my meetings with many highly respected leaders of HR I am beginning to notice a change. No longer are companies talking about layoffs. (They aren't talking about major hiring either.) Maybe we are beginning to see the effects of trying to balance our own budgets. Recent unemployment numbers and the stock market support the end is near as well, but even if we are not at the bottom, the exercise of trying to balance our budgets is teaching us to we must change our own economic conditions. We are all learning the lesson the hard way; the buck stops here.

So, where are these unprecedented times taking us? I think I'll leave that to the futurists, but if we have learned anything it is “There is no such thing as a free lunch” and we all need to be held accountable for our own budgets.

This is true for individuals and businesses.
