Why consider a flexible workforce now?
Don Schmitz/Human Resource Staffing

With the right workforce contingency plan, large and small businesses can maximize their investment in human capital, save money, and gain market share at the expense of less nimble competition.

We all know “business as usual” will not be the answer going forward. Flexibility is going to be key. Leaders have learned the hard way once again that a full-time employment is extremely costly and doesn’t provide them the opportunity to make changes fast enough to take advantage of short term profits.

Who would have predicted?
1. The Federal government with their very successful “Cash for Clunkers Program” would have difficulty paying the dealers on time?
2. Brett Favre would be wearing a purple number 4 Jersey in 2009 and a limited supply of t-shirts?
3. The need for cell phones to have keyboards to access popular social network sites and text message?

These are all examples of the need for a flexible changing workforce. Long term workforce plans could never have predicted these needs and as a result lost out on huge $’s necessary to show profit in recessionary times.

Large companies are especially guilty of not being able to feed the growing segments of our company’s profit centers. They waited too long to reduce their workforce and now can’t take advantage of the best labor market in many years. Companies, that can make quick changes will maximize on this short window of opportunity.

As I’ve written before, these are unprecedented times. Most of us have never lived when a national unemployment was above 10% and more companies showing red ink than not.

New workforce contingency plans are changing to include a more flexible workforce. Companies that can take advantage of the premium talent available will not only discover they will pay less, but will gain a big advantage on their competition when the economy begins to soar. Not only will they find the best flexible talent available in years, but they will have “proven performers” they can bring on staff when the dollars again begin to flow.
