Preparing
for Growth

Companies
have made their cuts, the stock market is over 10,000 and
we are now ready for a full recovery. Not…
It's
not because companies aren't trying. We've cut jobs, frozen
wages and closed factories and stores. Though we have exceeded
Wall Street's recent expectations, something's missing. Financial
analysts have named our improving financial conditions a “jobless
recovery”.
What's
wrong with our recovery? American companies are not investing
in their core businesses, not investing in new research and
not hiring and innovating their way out of this recession.
Our employees have watched their coworkers go out the door,
their work load increase, their raises diminished and their
benefits reduced. Public companies are seeing their stocks
slowly improve and holding off on hiring while small businesses
cannot go to the bank because of tight credit conditions.
Since
the beginning of the industrial revolution, improvements in
our standard of living have come through innovation. Innovation
is defined as, “ The introduction
of something new, a new idea, method, or device”. Innovation
often includes money for research & experimentation, acquisitions
and bringing on new employees. Innovation does not need to
go away as a result of a strong recovery. Examples include
Ireland and Spain , who have seen strong recovery and strong
employment growth. Are we going to be able to compete in this
global recovery?
Lost
in our present recovery is the hiring of new employees. Our
unemployment numbers are rising and are expected to continue
to climb throughout 2010. At the same time, our present employees
are feeling unappreciated. Without dedicated employees, American
companies may not be able emerge from this current crisis.
What
can I do?
- Show your
employees you care each day and let them know you can be
trusted
- Retain your
vision for improving conditions for your employees and help
them feel appreciated today
- Reduce stress
on our employees and their families
- Hold open
discussions with your employees and be prepared to listen
- Involve the
leaders of your organization in your discussions
President
Obama has this to say about our efforts going forward; “We
don't just drift into the future accepting less for our children
accepting less for America…We have to choose instead what
past generations have done: to shape a brighter future through
hard work and innovation.”
